Delegate’s Report to Area 47, March 20 – April 9, 2017
Delegates Report for the period March 20 to April 9, 2017
At the pre-conference, April assembly (as at the March assembly) I was glad to see the increased attendance and the enthusiastic participation of the assembly in reviewing the conference agenda items. Thank you to the agenda item presenters at the assembly. I know that all the presenters from the last two assemblies and the members of the assembly did a great job of preparing me for the conference. In addition, my own study and preparation; the district and home group meetings I attended; and the counsel I received from various trusted servants has made clear to me the area conscience. Thank you!
You have heard me on numerous occasions say that our service is an opportunity to become a better person. Recently, I had to relearn a simple lesson: Trust God. A couple of weeks before the assembly I was feeling overwhelmed with all the information I needed to digest and anxious that I would not be well prepared in time for the conference. In fact, it was a simple case of perfectionistic thinking. It is important to me to have a service sponsor and other close trusted servants that I can turn too. They helped me to see what was really going on. The outcome was that my trust in God was strengthened. I will be going to the conference confident that I am well prepared to represent you at the conference and to do what is the very best for A.A. We read at the end of Concept Three that “Our entire A.A. program rests squarely upon the principle of mutual trust. We trust God, we trust A.A. and we trust each other.” Thank you for placing your trust in me.
Service Events Reports: April 1, Love and Service Group Conscience, Rochester, NY: Previously, the group had assigned conference agenda topics to different “teams,” for their study and discussion. At the group conscience, the team leaders reported back their findings. A PowerPoint presentation was utilized. There were nearly 30 members in attendance. Patty S, Panel 63, Past Delegate also attended. I listened to the feedback, and contributed when appropriate. This group provided a great example of trusting the committee (teams, in this case) process. The group is well-known for their commitment to service, including general service. It was an informative and well organized meeting. I very much appreciated their input.
April 2, Big Book Discussion Group Conscience, Rochester, NY: Group members had reviewed selected conference agenda items prior to the meeting. Following discussion, a vote was held to determine the group conscience. Again, my role was to listen and to provide information if asked. Approximately a dozen members were in attendance, including Bob W, Panel 37, Past Delegate. This group is also well-known for their commitment to service, including general service. Attendees were prepared for the meeting which resulted in a very productive session. Their contribution to the pre-conference process was very much appreciated by me.
April 3, Rochester Young People in A.A. (ROCYPAA) Committee Meeting, Rochester, NY: At this meeting, I gained a greater appreciation of the structure and function of the Young People in A.A. committee. Approximately 15 people were in attendance. Although, I was not on the agenda, the committee was gracious enough to give me time to share with them information on the conference. ROCYPAA is A.A. in action. They are extremely focused on carrying out the primary purpose. And, several committee members have a good amount of general service experience. At the Area Assembly, I was pleased to note, that it was many of the committee members who did the necessary work to ensure that we had an organized and hospitable meeting. I plan on attending a future Rochester committee meeting and if there are other committee meetings in CNY Area 47.
April 6, District 0200 Meeting, Fairport, NY: At this meeting, one of the agenda items that District members discussed was plans to increase participation in general service by groups that are not currently represented. I suggested that participation initiatives should also be linked with a plan to retain those newly enlisted in general service. The district formulated a plan of various actions and I will be interested to see how it develops over the next several months. The district is also going to host a future area assembly. There were 10 members in attendance. The meeting was well organized and I liked how they worked together.
