Delegate’s Report to Area Assembly, April 5, 2020

The delegates and alternate delegates of the Northeast have a Zoom meeting with our regional trustee every week in an effort to a.) have a recovery meeting! b.) keep up to date with information as plans remain “fluid” and change frequently to adapt to our changing times. The latest, as of 4/5/20:

The General Service Conference will be “virtual,” meaning it will be held via video conference online. They are thinking it should be held in mid-May. However, they are unsure how long it will be. It may be just a few hours on one day to hold the legally required business, such as elections, and all the agenda items will push until next year. If that happens, they are trying to decide if they should continue to accept new items for next year. Another option is the conference be held for multiple days, but the workdays and the overall content will need to be shortened since we need to start on west coast time and end east coast time. In this case, each committee would meet to decide which agenda items should be dealt with this year and which items are pushed to next. There is no proposal where all agenda items will be dealt with this year.

Our GSO staff is in the epicenter of the COVID-19 health crisis and their safety and well being will come first in determining which GSC option can be pursued. They have done an amazing job coming up with options thus far!

As you have likely heard, the International Convention in Detroit has been canceled. Because arrangements with hotels and the convention spaces take years to arrange, postponing this event was not feasible. The good news is, we did have Event Insurance, which I’m told saves us from any large financial losses. We did have costs that we can’t recoup, such as staff time spent planning thus far, or staff trips taken in the past to Detroit for planning meetings there.
